Invasion of the fungus!

Yes, I've made this observation before, but when you're out geocaching you often come across some serendipitous discoveries.

I was merrily wandering around with this guy, and what did I find?

Mushrooms!

You don't see these growing wild very often in a dry state like Utah.

I've never come across this kind with the gills seemingly on top of the cap. Anyone know what they are?

  1. Over here similar toadstools are called fairy caps, usually found (as yours were) on the bases of trees or stumps. Not sure what the Latin name is though!

  2. That's a good starting point. I'll do a bit more research and see what I can find out. Thanks, Gretel.

  3. Wow, it really HAS been wet there this year. I guess Eldon will feel right at home in the fall.

Internet reality check: If you wouldn't feel comfortable saying it to my face, it probably doesn't belong here.
