Now you've put that image in my head, I will never be able to look at a sickle moon on its back again without thinking of it! (I used to think it was dear little boat sailing through a dark sea)
The crescent moon can be many things. I'm pretty sure this was what Alfred Noyes was thinking of when he described the moon as "a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas," for instance.
